Michael Chan called me and had a nice cry about it, and Emily Sherlock almost killed herself. Everybody at school has been dealing with a freshly crushed soul.

I have wanted to delete my entire blog for a long time... since some time this summer. The few people who I care about will already know everything I would post, and a lot of people who dont give a fuck about me read this blog anyway... and I dont like that.

As you can notice, I have posted very little in the last few months, and nothing in the last month. However, my drafts folder has 40 entries in it that I decided not to post, all from the last three or four months. I dont publish them because most of them are only intended for very few people, or they are too important to me to post on this thing for people who I barely know to be reading.

Ironically, those unpublished posts are my reason for keeping this blog up. When I sit down and hit the 'create post' page, it is sometimes easier for me to write whatever it is that I write. Maybe it is because the idea of having any audience entertains or inspires me, but I really dont know. All that I do know is that I write differently in my drafts than in any notebook or word document, so I am keeping this thing running just for that.

Around a month ago, I published a post about how I stopped writing because the only emotion that I care about is impossible to write about directly. That lasted a couple days until I realized that of course I can't put the best emotion into words, nobody except for maybe Jeff Mangum can. I realized a lot of things I was doing wrong when I wrote, and I fixed them, and now I write a lot.

I am keeping every past post on my blog as a means of history. I look back to my posts from late 2004 when I started this... and it amazes me how I have changed. Even my posts up through April are so different from anything I would ever write today. If today I met the John Frank of last December or April, I would despise him (and he would probably want to kick my ass). I am an entirely different person, and even though those early posts came during some real shitty times that I would rather forget about, i like having them to reflect upon.

Right now I am doing real good even though it is sort of a drag to be thrown back into society's maelstrom after a real peaceful summer.

On a completely random sidenote to this post; Ryan and I recently started an expiremental noise band, which is probably called Manners but that could change. Anyway, I am very excited about this project. I think it is the new punk rock and Ryan thinks it is "the sound of revolution." We will be doing a show somewhere in the next two months, hopefully in late October, because I am really excited to show this music to kids who have never heard anything like it. Also once we get more material on tape, we are going to make some cassettes and give them out at school or sell them for a couple dollars, or something. When I play in Manners, every sound created represents an emotion from inside of me, and no other music can so nakedly expose those raw emotions like that, and that is why I am very excited about it. Anyway, sorry about that random paragraph.

Hey just for fun, here are a few of the titles of some unpublished drafts I have, dating back to late June through just last night: "Emily Kane/Red Moon," "rewinding Celeste," "Frenzied April," "Tommorow as Just," "Why must Bob Dylan exist?," "Tuesday Hotel Mirrors Optimistic," "somepeople 'fraidtosay itloud," "gunning for us," "smashyface," "arsonist of lovelessness," "AUGUST 17, 2005," "Owleyes," "Ryan the Ghost," "in a revolution/inner evolution," "Sheltered broken beaters I," "Firey Fire Inside," "Ariel and Him," "A Lover's Protest," "Sun part II," and many many Untitleds.

There will be no new posts anymore. This blog is strictly a tool for me to write through. Of course, they will probably start flooding out now that I just said that...
Peace.

Shows

These are some shows coming up in the next couple months, mostly in Eugene but some big ones up in Portland. The show is for some big breastcancerawareness fundraiser, and there is supposed to be a lot of people there (the media and the radio station will be there too). Anyway: Sat 1PM Safeway. Thats all I know. Oh and its a full set, too.

Since getting back together three days ago after a monthlong hiatus, the Broken Arrow have changed their sound quite a bit, and its really exciting, especially for us.

Now we kick out these fifteen minute long groove jams and Ryan and I will occasionally drop in for a few vocals. The drummer emptied out his entire head and filled it back up with drums, rhythm, and more drums. And new material is flowing from our instruments like mad.

See, 'cause Ryan and I have some mad inspiration now.

dissing on the walrus v 2.0

At 6:52 PM, John said...
why is your neck frozen guys? were you running through too many moneyclouds or something?

At 8:18 PM, Josh said...
John seems to be filled with randomness these days

At 5:24 PM, John said...
excuse me josh but i am not the one with the lipfuzz hypocondriac silver spoon mansion in my back pocket. see we all get some action from the kings of holy nowhere but you abuse it and thats why you value hugs like they are pennies. your juice has run empty in the land of teenager underdog cliche. and see thats why theres no life left inside of your employee of being.

Post a Comment

<< Home

Alvar FB

Last night I said my goodbyes to Alvar at his party for the (most likely) last time.

Our friendship was a very different one, because we are very opposite personalities. However, if you would have honestly asked me who my best friend was, I would've most likely said Alvar. The way we connected in just the six months I have known him was unique because, as I have said, we are two completely different people. However, I think that those differences helped us connect really well with one another and we understood each other on a comical and personal level that is rare. I learned a lot of things from Alvar when he was here, and I am confident that he would say the same about me.

I have heard it said lately that people splitting ways like this tend forget all about each other after a couple months. But I have to refuse to beleive that concept. Sure, I will eventually stop missing Alvar, but I know that I won't forget him. I am not giving up hope of seeing him again someday, too. Merlin and Alvar and I talked last night of meeting up in Italy or France in a year or two, although I dont know how clear our thinking was.

Anyway, Alvar is gone. I am not really upset or anything but it sucks that he is taking off all of the sudden. Oh well, he is back in Spain where he doesnt hate it ("Yon, get me out of this shitty country!") and hopefully meeting back up with that pretty girl who he ditched for a little bit of Roseburg, Oregon, America soil.

PS. A couple days ago we set up alvarscorner.blogspot.com so that his firneds here can keep in touch.

Nature's Theives.

------------------------
for the bastards who belittle and then barbecue bambi
put your six-shooter in your suburban-swollen sucker
and stop sending your slaves to become
sons and daughters of the gun

something in your suburbia smells of sickest flesh stench
hunters' heavy game hangs as your warning to the French
blackened bloody beef is seen as your shotgun-barrel's prize
you are nature's theif as seen in your restive rifle eyes
------------------------

Of Taco Joints and Life.

I abandoned my sweet Taco Bell today.

I felt like such a traitor as I gave in to many a request by Diana to try Taco Time, the instution which competes with my second home, the Bell.

As I walked alone through the doors of this stupid little building, I wanted to hate everything about it so much. I wanted to hate the food, and I wanted to hate the atmosphere.

The first thing I noticed was the dude who tried to play drums with us last week, he was working there. He gave me that stupid Roseburg-head-nod thing (which is SO 90's by now, right?) and then he told the other dude to give me my meal for free. See, 'cause I am in a rock band. Not.

Alright, so I got the large bean burrito and the large vanilla coke, still hoping that it would be the grossest shit so that I could go back to my happy Taco Bell and get on with my life. Well.

Hey you know what, why am I trying to make this seem all crazy? Bottom line is, this place is hot. It felt nicer in there than in the Bell, and the burrito was fresher, and possibly better, than at the Bell. I didn't feel sick afterward like I had eaten some chemicals and shit. The hot sauce was fair, although there isn't anything like Taco Bell's Fire Sauce. It was a pleasant experience, and there were no creepy mental guys coming in and grinning at me, like they have at Taco Bell.

So now theres this dilemma, see? Because I like the trashiness of Taco Bell. I sorta dig that sick feeling in my stomach after I eat the little burrito, and I also sorta like those mental guys. Well, maybe not the mental guys, but they do have Mountain Dew at the Bell, and not at Taco Time. Oh and also if I start frequenting the Time, then I will miss that wierd lady who works at Taco Bell who knows my order by heart and who always tells me I should get a job there so that I don't have to pay for all this food. You see, Taco Bell is gloriously trashy. It is the crossroads of everything repulsive and beautiful about Roseburg. And my cravings are still directed toward the Bell.

I really don't know what to do. But I will admit, I was wrong about the Time. Place is respectable. Sorry Diana for hating on your favorite little fast-food joint. I will still most likely make make daily trips to Taco Bell, but now, if I am closer to the Time, that option is always available, and I just might swing by there every once in awhile, too.

Goodnight.

If you can Hear a Piano Fall, You can hear me Comin' Down the Hall

Last night was the show at Grad Night.

We got there at about 7:30 and set everything up in the main gym, including the two mics, our guitars and bass, and the keyboard which I was gonna play for one song on organ effect but couldnt because I forgot the freaking amp plug-in for it. Anyway after an hour or so we got our sound levels correct then we just took it easy until 1 AM, when the show started.

It was alright at first, there were some people watching what we were doing and sorta digging it, but after maybe four songs or so, it was like we were playing to a brick freaking wall or something. Nobody was moving, and maybe one or two people were even watching us. So when they're not into, its impossible for Ryan and I to get into it.

After about and hour of that kind of crap, a bunch of kids flooded in from somewhere and the lady had them do a dance off, and finally it was like the show came alive, and there were some kids dancing around and people were paying attention and enjoying themselves. So it was easier to get into it then, but the show went for like 3.5 hours so it felt really long and tedious.

Its hilarious because we used up our entire setlist in the first 1.5 hours, so then we just started making crap up out of nowhere, and it actually sounded alright. Ryan sang on a couple tracks, and it sounded pretty good. During our last five-minute break, toward the very end when everybody was in there, I taught Ryan and Garrett to play two White Stripes songs, "Seven Nation Army" and "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground." When we came back inside I put the vocals to both songs, and judging by the video that was taken of the show, it sounded pretty good. I was excited about that.

I got my hundred and twenty dollars then went home at 5:00 AM, not three hours before my Physics final was to begin. I am still really tired and confused or whatever.

Oh also after the show Ryan and I decided that we are gonna take a month-long break now. I told him that there is no inspiration left in the band right now, everytime we play it feels flat to me, and our songs are becoming too routine and boring.

Peace
-John

The class of two-thousand and five.

Well, today was the last day for seniors.

Over the last year, and especially the last few months, I have met so many really cool seniors. The Class of 2005 really kicks my ass. Over the past couple months, I have been meeting the kids who I should have been hanging out with for the last few years instead of the hip-hoppin wannabe-prep-star cats who I have been spending all my time with.

For instance, take Nick Lovemark. I talked to this kid for the first time a couple months back. This is one of the few kids in our school who truly knows where its at. The kind of kid who I always wished I had as a friend but never came across, so I figured this kind of person just didn't exist in this culture-deprived city. It is so unfortunate that I have finally come across Nick, and so many other friends who know whats up, just months before they have to leave. Sorry for sounding a little sentimental, but I have the feeling that if I had met Nick or any of these other kids a year ago, we would be best friends today.

So I guess it is just time and shit, and I feel like I am falling behind. Like where have I been? Do you know how much I have searched for cool kids in the last couple years, and how depressing it was not to find them anywhere? Seriously, where the hell was I? These people were just down the hall, and I missed out.

It was ripping me up today to be with these new friends all together for the last time. And I am not even a senior! But how am I not supposed to be real upset about these people leaving me behind, you know? And I guess thats the other thing I regret, is not even getting to know even more of the seniors who I know I would totally be down with, 'cause now theres no time left to do it.

I guess grad night is gonna be incredible. I think that it is a fitting way for me to close out the school year, since meeting the seniors has been one of the major themes throughout this year.

I have love for tons of these kids; Jacob B, Chan, Green, Carol, Marz, Erika, Courtney, even Quentin too (Orange R 04-05 forever y'alls), Nick the aforementioned, Aaron the radical, kids in math, oh and Ryan the bandmate. And how could I ever forget the international trinity of Alvar, Merlin, and Fran? Or the tennis cats like Justin and Tim? I will even miss Ken F, Jeff A, whether they know it or not those cats sort of taught me tolerance this year, and I really like them, no matter how bad they are at political analysis or at rapping. Those are just names that come to mind, I know there are others.

I know that when I look back on what my Junior year was like, most of what I will think of involves these people. I am happy that many are headed just to UCC, so that I can build on relationships with them, or even to U of O, where they will be within an hour from here. But then theres kids like Nick who is going to Southern California and Jacob who is headed to effing Illinois or whatever.

Time sucks. This summer I want to make a point and hang out with these kids as much as I can. are they real? does anybody care? you ride the bus dont you? aint nobody ever bumped into you before? was it an accident? lotta questions. rhett and scarlett, what are they? cant be true love. but there are others. unrequited is a word too. its in the dictionary. after truth i beleive. everyday life i guess some others look at as romantic. but what about us people? are those elements impossible for us to experience? do you know and welcome the idea of true love, stagind, destiny, mis en scene, hope for internal completion? everyone's talking about their hurt and their rage on the radio. and the armchair judge is the family bible in primetime today. what reality is fake? then drama is superficial and not admired, the judge and the apology is shallow, love is put aside. i think theres one truth, with no subjectivity. and in the corner is a booth with some productivity. under my arm is a device with conductivity and i gave it to you. no lessons ok? the city i live in, it aint no different man! your sidewalk has less cracks in it? how spoiled we are! funny, funny, funny. but you must have bought a book, and it is a reality to hold in your thought, lets put it together though. we know not to kill after seeing a murder on the screen, but do we know not to love when we see two fulfilled? your morning can go however you want it. no one owes you breakfast for example. no one owes you a ride. and you know damn well you could walk there if you wanted to. and did you know that you could have what you need. to give is true and admirable too, but to be taken from is loss and totally false. imagine that you are being taken from. what faith is tested? what hope is wuthiering? what angel was persecuted who worked so hard at something never to acheive it? prove it to me. and what child who was innocent was pushed to the ground never to get up again? where's he/she at right now? wheres a starbucks when you need one? am i in destiny, am i in my kitchen? you're the book dammit. you are the morning. dont deny yourself with this duty-woman! dont damn yourself with a painted smile on skull-man! put it on the table. and dont deny it. whatever it is. do yourself a favor and breathe real, get it? funny, we're all still here man. nobody left, and its odd because the more you deny it, the funnier it gets. three kids are playing on the playground, and one turns to the other and says, "are they making us go to school or are we learning for the sake of beauty?" the other kids love this idea, and they laugh and pass notes about it for days. so we all know the right thing to do, and we all root for the underdog in the book, we cant help it! kick yourself off the island. she is her. he is us. the underdog wins in the book, and in real life? not just in some sports game. you know, but-- hey wouldnt it be nice if every sports team was only allowed to have team members from its own city? no trading. evil can be funny. righteousness is a barrel of laughs too. come on, we all know! its a new century, no sarcasm kids. boy these kids can take! how bout take the tongues out of their cheeks? no blasphemy. no talking under your breath. tell me what you want, and we can get it together. i'm not kidding. they wrote the books to share with you what assumed could be. they made the films to explore what you didnt get to do at work today. and they wrote the songs to fill in the gaps between being someplace, and getting there. but it by no means, don't mean, it cant be. you're probably already there, just admit it. just say it. then you'll get it. stay the truth, and hold with this word behind tooth, to know that truth pushes truth forward, and to be taken is to be held, and to be stolen from is to lose what truth you deserve, pretending this is pretending the play with no audience but yourself, the options are sometimes not options at all, but distractions of temptations to live for something or someone else instead of yourself, breathing can't be taken, the fact can't be shaken, and the truth is sitll waiting always for you. i think we're gonna be ok."
-Jack White, in the liner notes of his new album "Get Behind Me Satan," out today.

L'ennui est contre-révolutionnaire.

Have a list.
1. I haven't had Taco Bell since Friday. I am having some really wild cravings though.
2. I am amazed at the art of Banksy.
3. Derrick C. Brown is an amazing poet.
4. I can't beleive how underappreciated the new Gorillaz album is. Besides the last Radiohead album, the new Gorillaz is the most representative album of what it feels like to be living in the 2000s.
5. School is ending just as it is starting to be fun.
6. My history project is going to fail because the people in my group are being stupid.
7. This weekend was pretty dull, except for jamming today with the band.
8. I am getting really excited for this grad-night show on Sunday. We will have more people there than we had at any of our last shows. It is also our first paid show, which is actually really exciting, because it shows that we are being appreciated.
9. After that show, I am going to try to sing on some of our songs, which I know sounds sort of disastrous, but I think it might work out.
10. Sorry but I don't think this show on Friday will work out. Too much crap going on with school, etc. But I promise I will have another show sometime in the next few weeks.
11. I seriously like every person in that class (its not even really like a class), and its sad that all the cool seniors are leaving. It was surprising to me how close some of us all got this year.

I am going to miss both Jacobs (Bentley and Green), Chan (aka Thom Yorke Jr.), Carol, Erika/Courtney/Marz/(how could i not list them all together like that?), also I will miss the presence of Quentin and Travis for sure, I never really got to know those guys very well but I like them both, oh yeah also Jessica who is a pretty good rock star in Bastard Measure.

Hell, I'll even miss Jeff, who I just so happened to MANGLE in Thursday's Rap Battle, but how can I dislike a guy who is willing to kick some rhymes with me? Plus when he said my shades look like Officer Steve, that was just brilliant (not). Or how about the time that he was like "that dumbass jon just dont know how to rhyme?" I mean, this kid speaks of true originality. Plus he admitted to thinking that Bartlett was hot. He doesn't shop at Target though (I will NEVER make the mistake of saying that again). Just playing. Wow, where am I going with this?

But no seriously I will miss the seniors a lot and I will miss seeing all you juniors every day, even though we will hang out for sure this summer, except for the one person who now hates me, but thats off topic.

But I am really excited about next year and all the new people who will join our staff. I know for sure that theres going to be some pretty awesome people rocking it in O.R. next year.

Peace.

Gettin psyched out for this ricky-rap battle, y'all.

My hour long epic.

Last night Ryan came over so that we could work out some songs that we each had written in the last week. At about 10:30 we went to Taco Bell and when I was almost done with my burrito, this guy just comes in a sits like right next to us. He just sort of smiled at me and then walked out, but his eyes were fixed on my change box on the table the entire time (the change box is the old Winterfresh box where I keep all my dimes for when I run out of money). It was both the funniest and creepiest thing I have seen in a long time.

But what I really want to post about is this:
Alright so last night Ryan and I had been jamming on our guitars into the wee hours of the night, working out these messed up progressions and writing some pretty solid songs when I decided to lay my guitar to rest and start playing on the (electric) piano. On Friday I had written this really sort of eerie but sort of gorgeous peice on the piano, so I started playing it and then Ryan joined in with the guitar. I remember looking at the clock right before we started and it was like 1:20. Anyway, so we sort of worked into this eerie jam and it was getting really intense, really emotional. Just one of those moments where I am able to transfer every emotion running through my body into this simple song, its a really powerful feeling. Anyway, this song was becoming more and more beautiful as we played, and we were weaving these really sort of magnificent rythyms into each other's song, and we had created this very alive, pulsing, somewhat dark, sad, very emotional piece of music. There have been other times where we have connected on a higher musical level, but this was one of the most powerful. The song, which had become somewhat of a symphony in my head, soon crept to a stop, and it eventually died. I looked at the clock, and it was 2:15. We just sort of looked at each other, and we knew that what we had just created was brilliant.

I can copy Mallorie too.

1. I want to put together an end-of-the-school-year show for my band to play at, where we will just invite our friends and tell them to invite their friends and hopefully enough people show up. If we dont find anywhere to play the show we will probably use my backyard or something. Right now I am thinking not this Friday but the one after that, the Friday before graduation.
2. Last night I was there and I couldnt beleive the place. Its so undeniably glorious yet trashy at the same time. Recently I have been straying from the 7-layer burrito and a Large Mountain Dew(total: $3.09) and instead going with the bean burrito/soft taco/Large Mountain Dew combo(total: $3.67). Also I swear they must be breaking ever single minors' labor law possible, because there are these two sophomores from our school who are there like 24/7, even during school hours sometimes.

Edan - "The Beauty and the Beat": This album has been ripping up my car stereo for the last month on repeat. I listen to it through at least once a day. The only downside is that it has replaced my listening to NPR.

The word "Badass": Yeah I say it a lot now.

My new guitar: Cant stop playing it. This past week I have written so many new songs.

I guess I am just a badass, guitar-playing, hip-hop banging Taco-Bell junkie.

Freeze

Isnt the sunshine nice?

Bucky Done Gun.

On Friday I went to this 'peace rally' at the courthouse with some friends. Its cool that something like it was organized in this community, and there were a lot of people there.
A. There were people there playing folk songs reminiscent of the music played at gatherings in the 60s, and all the songs they were playing were from that era. While I love folk music and they were great performers, that music is now rooted in nostalgia, and I wish that our generation would start making a music which we could unite under and which we could call our own. Why isn't there anybody gathering in front of the courthouse rapping about war, abusive government, or broken politics which influence our lives?
B. It is sad that there were about five people my age there, and then about 75 people who are in their 60s.

Chocolate Shoptop Darts and Wesley Weekend.

Alright so my band (known in some circles as... "Broken Arrow"?) is playing tommorow night, Saturday May 14, at the Elks Lodge downtown for the Hebe Statue Fundraiser event. Show starts at 7:00 PM and I think we are the second band on, after the *cough* Sunny Peaches. There is not a doubt that we will totally rip it up, so you have no excuse not to be there. Our set will also be all original material, which I am really excited for. One other thing, the show costs $7 but if that is honestly the reason that you dont come, please come I will pay you the money back because I am just down like that.
Tommorow 7pm elks lodge. Also if anybody wants to hook up afterwards I think some of us are going to Denny's or something.
Also its for a good cause. Oh and another reason you might want to come is that I am hooking up my bass through a VOX, which I have never done but I am way excited to do it. VOX, y'alls.
The final reason why you should come is that we will play "Sleepy Leaders (Lovers)," "Littlefoot gets Dressed," and "California Child" for the first time, as well as a few other new tracks. You can tell I am pretty psyched out for this.

See you there.

thanx 4 the fun

Today in Eugene I traded in some crappy old Coldplay and Polyphonic Spree albums for:
Cpt. No seriously, though, I would actually like to go to this.

Today in Medford I saw this girl who was all punked out and crap, with like all the punk rock patches and crap going on, but then she turned around and she had a very beautiful face. Like, really very beautiful, and it just struck me as odd because most of the punk kids tend to be a little crazy looking, or if they are pretty then they usually ruin it with stupid hair or peircings or something. Anyway, this girl was very pretty. I was pissed because before I could talk to her she was gone. I probably wouldnt have anyway. But I wondered if maybe I could connect with some of those kids better than with my usual acquaintances... too bad that in Roseburg even the 'punks' are ultra-conservative... and they dont know anything about punk rock.

Lately I havent been writing anything really. Its the most hilarious website I have seen in ages.

So the first quarter of 2005 is up, so its time for me to list the best albums I have heard this year so far.
1. M.I.A. - "Arular"
2. Fiery Furnaces - "EP"
3. Sage Francis - "A Healthy Distrust"
4. Out Hud - "Let us never speak of it again"
5. Pedestrian - "unIndian Songs Vol. 1"
6.Antony and the Johnsons - "I am a Bird now"
7. Daft Punk - "Human After All"
8. Sole - "Live From Rome"
9. Prefuse 73 - "Surrounded by Silence"
10. Beck - "Guero"
The last few albums on there I dont really recommend, I bought the albums but they suck. Oh also I have heard the new Stephen Malkmus, Four Tet, and Weezer albums, but those all technically come out in May. The Malkmus album is better than any of the ones on this list, and the new Weezer is horrible.

Hey if anybody wants the new Beck CD "Guero" I have an actual copy that I would be glad to give you, just ask. So I went today and it was unbeleivable. I mean, you've gotta understand, like, this is my thing.

So I spent two hours today scrummaging through half of their collection, maybe 5,000 records, most of which were old 45's. At five when the shop closed, I had already found these:

-Pink Floyd - "Wish You Were Here" LP
-"Saturday Night Fever OST" LP
-Michael Jackson - "Thriller" LP
-David Bowie - "We are the Dead" 45
-David Bowie - "Sound and Vision" 45
-Yes - "Owner of a Lonely Heart" 45

but these ones are what made me want to piss myself:
-Elvis Costello - "Watching the Detectives" 45 (b/w "Alison")
-Soft Cell - "Tainted Love" 45 (amazing....)
-Bob Dylan - "Tangled up in Blue" 45

and this one was the best find of the day, I seriously was caught so out of my element when I saw this:
-Beastie Boys - "It's the New Style" 45 (b/w "Paul Revere")
Like, honestly, you don't just waltz around Roseburg and accidentally stumble upon a copy of the Beastie Boys' first vinyl single.

The Soft Cell 45 and the Beastie Boys 45 are my favorites, but the Bowie singles are also really great. Tommorow I am going back to sift through another five grand records, so my hopes are high to find some more great stuff, hopefully some more Beasties or Bob Dylan. If I stumble upon a copy of Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love" 45 then I will literally start crying.... but it isnt likely.

Waking Life

Last weekend I rented the film "Waking Life." type='text'>Keep them arrows a'breakin.

Tonite was Broken Arrow's first official gig; it was good.

Ryan stole the show with a psychadelic indian-poncho dance-around mania, keeping hot sounds flowing from the frontlines.

I kept a smooth low-sound with the chilly chilly four-string while I smacked some Bubble-yum and watched kid poncho run free.

The drummer (who was on the verge of a mental breakdown before the show) was able to transfer that energy into some hot beats of kick-drum karazee.

The crowd totally was fired up; a blessing. After the show Scott B (who organized it) came up to us and offered us a show of our own (90 minute set) sometime before summer comes along; another blessing, being that we have like 15 more songs that we would like to have played. But our own gig!!!

Exactly one month ago our band got together for the first time, ever. Now we are cooking some straight-up jam. The new talent that unveiled itself this year was unbeleivable, and I beleive that 2004 has been the most important, and best, year of the decade so far for music. This was a really tough list for me, much tougher than last year's list, due to the difficulty of organizing the vast talent and recalling everything that I heard and enjoyed.

Two important movements gained a lot of momentum and attention this year. The first is the rapidly growing indie folk scene. A large portion of this year's new talent rose from this spring to embrace the beauty of music past, recalling some of the earliest roots of contemporary music as a homage to beauty in it's essential form. The second important movement is the extremely energetic noise scene. Whereas the folk scene embraced music as we know it, the noise scene is about demolishing all previous musical conventions and advancing music in a completely new direction, paving the way for a new future in sound.

In 2004 we saw the art or hip-hop take a break from last year's barrage of stellar releases, although one extremely significant mainstream rap album was released. We also were given a bizarre hip-hop/classic rock mash-up album from an underground dj that directed much attention to the independent hip-hop scene, an album thats importance will increase as the decade rolls on.

Out of over 50 full-length albums that I heard this year, these 25 are the best. Each of the releases that you will see on this list were released in 2004. Enough said; here's my list, beginning with the 25th and working on down to the number one album of 2004. Enjoy.

25. Black Dice - "Miles of Smiles"
Although it is classified as an EP, "Miles of Smiles" clocks in at over 30 minutes. It acts as a transition peice between 2002's phenomenal "Beaches and Canyons" and this year's "Creature Comforts." The title track is as creepy as Black Dice have ever been, revovling around cut up and schewed marching band music.

24. Deerhoof - "Milkman"
"Milkman" lacks the expirementation of Deerhoof's earlier releases and it certainly is not as poppy as last year's "Apple O," but it just might be the group's finest album to date. The most noticeable difference from previous recordings is that all of the songs on "Milkman" are very organized and structured. And the cover art is brilliant.

23. Various Artists - "DFA Compilation #3"
This excessive compilation acts as a good representation of what the DFA are all about: stretched-out dance epics created on sp-1200's. Some of this material becomes a little too boring with it's expanded length, but there are some really bright spots such as Pixeltan's "Get Up Say What" and LCD Soundsystem's "Yeah."

22. Panda Bear - "Young Prayer"
"Young Prayer" is the musical equivalent to a young man ripping out fragments of his soul and peicing them together over echoed guitar arrangements. This album from the Animal Collective member packs so much emotion in such a short period of time that it will either leave you crying, dizzy, or both.

21. Mansbestfriend - "The New Human is Illegal"
Disappointingly, Anticon didn't release a single good album this entire year. But Sole did drop this self-produced bomb on the Morr Music label under the alias of Mansbestfriend. Why this album wasn't put out on Anticon escapes me, because it certainly is good enough. Sole's up-in-your face flow is matched by his very own rough production aesthetic, and his political rants fit perfectly in 2004. Sadly, this is one of very few solid independent hip-hop releases this year.

20. Beastie Boys - "To the Five Boroughs"
I like this album so much because it was a perfect soundtrack to my summer. When everything was so happy, nonsensically stupid b-boy rhymes really hit the spot. The Beastie Boys have never sucked this bad, but they are still the Beastie Boys, and no matter how bad they ever get, we will all still love them.

19. Bjork - "Medulla"
For some reason, it seems like this album never got the attention it deserves. Every noise on this album was created by human voice, but you would never know it unless somebody told you, because Rahzel's beatbox and Bjork's wails come off so convincingly as real instruments.

18. Interpol - "Antics"
Another album that couldn't meet it's inporportionate expectations that is best when not compared to it's predecessor. Post-punk is dying out very quickly, and the complete lack of originality here acts as proof. Interpol is pushed into ripping off the Pixies and deriving some sound from the already-stale dance-punk movement.

17. cLOUDDEAD - "Ten"
cLOUDDEAD's 2001 self-titled release is one of the best albums of the 2000's so far, so there were a lot of expectations for this one. Unfortunately, it did not come close to matching those expectations, instead leaving me with a very short collection of songs. However, when not compared to their other album, this is a fine recording of twisted pop songs for the new millenium.

16. Les Savy Fav - "Inches"
Another summer album, this one blew my socks of when I got it because I had such low expectations for it but it rocked. It is a 'singles collection' compiled of various 7" records released in the last eight years, and it is clear that Les Savy Fav have matured a lot as a group. IT also comes with a live DVD of some pretty crazy footage. LSF rule.

15. Sufjan Stevens - "Seven Swans"
I would never have thought that a Christian folk album would rank so high in my year-end list, but "Seven Swans" is completely deserving of this spot. There are some extremely powerful moments on record here, as proven by the frightening title track, one of the year's best songs. The song builds up to an unprecedented crescendo before Sufjan releases the intense chorus, all backed up by his beautiful banjo and voices of members of the Danielson Famile. Definitely one of the year's most beautiful and glorious records.

14. Danger Mouse - "The Grey Album"
I like the Beatles' "White Album" and I also like Jay-z's 2003 "Black Album." But when I heard that some DJ had somehow cut them both up and mixed them together as the "Grey Album," I was less than interested. However, curiosity grew and I decided to give it a try. The result is a thoroughly entertaining product, and it even is better than Jay-Z's version. Since this record dropped, Danger Mouse has gotten a ridiculous amount of media attention, which is starting to gain independent hip-hop some attention from mainstream outlets. The importance of "The Grey Album" will only grow as more and more people are turned on by it's inventive ways.

12. Devendra Banhart - "Nino Rojo"
Last year, Devendra Banhart recorded around 50 songs on an old 4-track recorder in some guy's house. Amazed by his performance, his record label decided to split up the songs and release two albums within the next year. "Nino Rojo" is the second Banhart album of 2004, and it brings together the more orchestrated songs of the bunch. This record is not as consistent as "Rejoicing in the Hands," the first release, but it does have some amazing high points that the best moments of that record cannot even touch.

11. The Walkmen - "Bows and Arrows"
The Walkmen played on "The O.C." last week, how low is that? Do they really have to pander to a bunch of misguided young girls in order to feel like they have fans? At least they didnt soundtrack the part where the one guy sleeps with his best friends mom, the same mom who slept with his girlfriend's brother, who just happens to like the other guy. Anyways; whatever the Walkmen have to do for money, it is tough to criticize them when they are releasing amazing albums like "Bows and Arrows."

10. Black Dice - "Creature Comforts"
If I had to choose three bands who I think are most important in relevance to music today, Black Dice would be a shoe-in. For the entire millenium, they have been at the forefront of the noise scene, expanding the limits of music like no other band. "Creature Comforts" lacks the epic qualities of their last release, but it makes up in mind-blowing expirementation. In that sense, this album is Black Dice's "Kid A." What Black Dice are doing with noise is unbeleivable, revolutionary, and extremely important.

9. Madvillain - "Madvillainy"
MF Doom is arguably the underground's best rapper, and Madlib has proven through a string of releases to be one of the best independent hip-hop producers. So what do you get when the two collaborate? A lot of pressure and unreachable expectations. However, somehow, the pair known as Madvillain overcame those expectations to mold one of the best underground hip-hop albums of all time. Both artists are at their best, and both bring fresh new material to the table. The most unique element of "Madvillainy" is the track structure; the album is divided into 23 songs, each hovering just around two minutes apeice. This form, reminiscent of early punk structures, is what gives "Madvillainy" the exciting fast pace that keeps it in my stereo. Note to Doom: stop flooding the market.

8. Animal Collective - "Sung Tongs"
In the introduction to this list, I mentioned that there are two unique movements rising up in the music today: the reminiscent folk, and the revolutionary noise. Animal Collective somehow manage to meld those two genres together, creating folk layered under coats of wild expirementation. "Sung Tongs" is far from their best release to date, mostly in part due to it's inconsistency, but some of these songs ("Leaf House," "Who Could Win a Rabbit") are individually some of the Collective's greatest acheivements. What isn't there to love about four guys who dress up as scary animals and trip out on acid all day?

7. Kanye West - "College Dropout"
Importance plays a large role in how high I place albums on this list, and this particular album is chalk-full of it. It is no mistake to anyone that mainstream hip-hop has been headed in an overall terrible direction for the past ten years. It has become one mass orgy of violence, sexism, and dare I say it.... crunk. So now all of the sudden there comes this egomaniacal guy named Kanye West who speaks of faith, self-consciousness, and points out the faults of rap today. On top of that, he is the mainstream's best producer who has the cred to work with anybody who he wants to. I hate to make broad, cliched statements like this, but... the savior of hip-hop?

6. Xiu Xiu - "Fabulous Muscles"
WTF. "Fabulous Muscles" is the most bizarre album of the year, by far. Jamie Stewart's point has never been to make us feel comfortable, and he certainly does not, as felt through his twisted pop dementia backed up by cutting freaktronica noise and disturbing strings. Like a psychotically beautiful nightmare, "Fabulous Muscles" is simultaneously sweet and harsh. One of the most solid and progressive indie releases of the decade.

5. Wolf Eyes - "Burned Mind"
"Burned Mind" is the most confrontational, abrasive, and utterly choatic album that I have ever heard, and that says a lot. In a year in which many of us, as a whole, feel headed in the wrong direction, Wolf Eyes have created the perfect soundtrack to a decimated future. What is most striking about Wolf Eyes is how they are able to convey human emotions such as fear, destruction, and death through pure noise. On top of that, "Burned Mind" still is quite accessible, which makes it not only the best noise album of the year, but also a true noise masterpeice.

4. Joanna Newsom - "The Milk-Eyed Mender"
The first time I heard "the Milk-Eyed Mender," I hated it. Joanna Newsom's high-pitched squeal of a voice was hard to take for an album's worth of material. However, upon repeat listens, the voice grew on me, revealing layers upon layers of beautiful melodies that accompanied her instrumentation graciously. Somehow, it all works together charmingly, and each listen it reveals more and more of it's beauty. "The Milk-Eyed Mender" is a landmark album for the freak-folk scene.

3. Arcade Fire - "Funeral"
Woven throughout Arcade Fire's "Funeral" are themes of growing up, responsibility, and loss of innocence. The emotions evoked throughout this record are extremely powerful and fitting to this important stage in life. The opening track, "Neighborhood #1," reveals the want for independence, and as "Funeral" progresses, that independence is given. However, with it becomes responsibility, leaving our narrator wondering if it was really worth it. "Funeral" is one of the best indie albums of the decade, without a doubt.

2. Fiery Furnaces - "Blueberry Boat"
"Blueberry Boat" is quite possibly the most dense, twisted, and puzzling indie rock album I have ever heard. Each of the album's 13 songs is compiled of multiple fragments, scatterbrained ideas peiced together to form one glorious collage. Thrown into the mix are shots of nearly every already-explored genre, bending them all into the Fiery Furnaces' schewed vision. It is masterful lyrically as well, with each song acting as it's own individual story, told from perspectives of child and adult, resulting in an homage to innocence and the loss of it. The bizzare instrumentation becomes increasingly mind-blowing with each listen. "Blueberry Boat," crammed with it's abundance of ideas, is one of the most solid albums that I have ever heard.

1. Devendra Banhart - "Rejoicing in the Hands"
In 2004, freak-folk went rampant, over-taking the indie scene stronger than any movement in recent memory. Most of that work can be credited to Devendra Banhart, who crafted two individual albums this year. The better of these two albums is "Rejoicing in the Hands." There is a magic quality about this album that I have only heard once beforehand, which was with Neutral Milk Hotel's 1998 classic "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea." Here, Banhart produces lyrical qualities reminiscent of early folk pioneers, and instead of putting his words to his music, like most other musicians, he crafts his music to fit his words. "Rejoicing..." is chalk-full of beauty and peacefulness, and although it barely progresses music to new areas, it does embrace and emulate everything good about music past.

There you have it, my top 25 albums of 2004. (Since making this list, I have heard many more exceptional 2004 releases that would rank very high. Some of these are Dungen's "Ta det Lugnt," Annie's "Anniemal," and Frog Eyes' "Folded Palm.")

Top 30 singles of 2004

This is my list of the top 30 singles of 2004. Please note that this is not strictly the year's 30 best songs (to choose just 30 tracks from every one that I heard this year would be very difficult). Rather, I only am including individual songs that were either released as a seperate CD/vinyl single or that were made a video.

I feel that these artists have each acheived the use of the single in it's intended way; these are songs that can stand alone as great accomplishments, whereas many other great songs act more as peices of an album. Most of the songs on this list are fairly accessible to the average listener.

Also note that by including some of these artists on my list, I am not necessarily saying that I like them. I ovbiously do not like Britney Spears or Snoop Dogg, but I do feel that they have made some nice work.

30. Sonic Youth - "Unmade Bed"
29. Ratatat - "Germany to Germany"
28. The Walkmen - "The Rat"
27. Madvillian - "All Caps"
26. Beastie Boys - "Ch-check it out"
25. Frog Eyes - "The Oscillator's Hum"
24. Iron and Wine - "Naked as we Came"
23. Bjork - "Who is it?"
22. Pixeltan - "Get up/Say what"
21. Ariel Pink - "For Kate I Wait"
20. Liars - "There's Always Room on the Broom"
19. Gwen Stefani - "What You Waiting For?"
18. Jay-Z - "99 Problems"
17. Wolf Eyes - "Stabbed in the Face"
16. Franz Ferdinand - "Take me Out"
15. Britney Spears - "Toxic"
14. Mirah - "Jerusalem"
13. Interpol - "Slow Hands"
12. Kanye West - "All Falls Down"
11. Pedestrian - "Toss and Turn"
1.
